MYSTERY OF THE UPSIDE DOWN ICICLES REVEALED

2003 The reason for the upside down icicles was because the wires had been torn down by trees and caused the lines to invert in the back spans. When tension is broken, the wires twist, thus causing the strange "upside down" icicles. - Brad Lay Allegheny Power lineman, Sunny Cal. Brian and Michele Hipp of Philips Run, submitted these photos of unusual icicle formations. Notice the icicles on the clothes line are pointing down, while the ones on the electric line above are "standing" straight up.
