GUNS ON PLANES - A Washington man was caught with a loaded handgun Saturday at Huntington Tri-State Airport.

Attempting to carry guns on planes in West Virginia has increased dramatically.

A release from the airport said the Snohomish County, Wash. man had a 9 mm pistol that was loaded with 15 rounds.

TSA officers spotted the gun when the man's belongings entered the X-ray machine, according to the release. Officer then contacted airport police who confiscated the weapon and detained the man for questioning.

It is unclear if the man is facing any charges. The TSA said a typical first offense for carrying a handgun into a checkpoint is a $4,000 fine.

This marks the seventh time this year that a gun has been caught at the airport's security checkpoint. Last year, just two firearms were found at Huntington Tri-State Airport.

Multiple carry-on incidents have been reported at Kanawha Airport.

The TSA said passengers are permitted to travel with firearms in checked baggage if they are properly packaged and declared. Firearms must be unloaded, packed in a hard-sided case, locked, and packed separately from ammunition. Firearm possession laws vary by state and locality.
