FAIRMONT STABBING - The Fairmont Police Department arrested a man after answering a stabbing complaint.

On May 7, officers responded to a call on Maple Avenue. They found Daniel Hocker on Spence Street, where he was yelling that he had called the police. Police said they learned that Hocker had been stabbed under his left arm by Eugene Payne III, 40, of Fairmont.

Hocker told officers that he was familiar with Payne because of a mutual female friend with whom they each have sex, according to a criminal complaint. Hocker told officers that he and Payne were at T.G.'s Bar on Adams Street. They each left and walked toward Maple Avenue and got into an argument on Quincy Street, police said.

On Maple Avenue, the argument turned into a fight, which ended with Payne taking out a knife and using it on Hocker, according to a criminal complaint. The knife caused a small laceration under Hocker's left arm, police said.

Officers found a knife on Maple Avenue, and an eyewitness stated that the altercation happened in that area, according to police. Police said the witness also provided a description of both parties that matched Hocker's description and what Hocker had described Payne to be wearing at the time. The witness statement added that Payne yelled, "where's my knife?" prior to following Hocker down Spence Street, according to a criminal complaint.

Payne is charged with malicious wounding. He is in North Central Regional Jail.
