A recent study has named West Virginia the worst state for millennials, a prime driver in the state's declining population.

The personal finance website WalletHub has recently released a study titled "2019's Best & Worst States for Millennials." The study compared all 50 U.S. States and the District of Columbia across 36 key metrics, including share of millennials, millennial unemployment rate, average earnings for millennials, among many others.

These key metrics were used to determine five category rankings, affordability, education & health, quality of life, economic health and civic engagement. The four category rankings were then used to determine an overall ranking for each state.

West Virginia came in last place in the study, placing 51st. The Mountain State also came in last place in the quality of life, economic health and civic engagement rankings. West Virginia placed 35th in the education and health ranking and in the top half of the affordability ranking at 18th.
