UNDERWOOD IMPROVING AFTER HEART SURGERY - Suffering Effects Of Flu And Pneumonia

(02/09/2003)
Former West Virginia Gov. Cecil Underwood is up and about, and taking his meals after undergoing aortic valve replacement and a quadruple bypass.

Charleston Area Medical Center spokesman Andy Wessels said Underwood, 80, is listed in fair condition. He was moved Wednesday night from the open-heart recovery area to a regular hospital room.

His daughter said he's still dealing with the effects of the flu and pneumonia.

Doctors said other than his heart problems, Underwood has remained in excellent physical condition. His family said he has read every card sent to him by well-wishers.
