RECRUITMENT BIG PROBLEM FOR GLENVILLE STATE - Under Threat Of Closure

(02/09/2003)
Replacing Glenville State College President Dr. Tom Powell may be a challenge, considering the college is under scrutiny to be closed. Powell is leaving to become head of Mount St. Mary's College & Seminary.

Recruiting students, faculty and staff will be even harder with state budget cuts and the prospect of closing two colleges, according to Dr. Robert Freeman, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Glenville.

Freeman said it is difficult to convince people to come into a rural area where medical service, malls and theaters are not just down the street. He said the threatened closing has the potential to be a death blow to the college in terms of recruitment.

Dr. Powell said he has been speaking with Sen. Robert Byrd's office in Washington, D.C. He has been urging the senator and U.S. Rep. Alan Mollohan, D-W.Va., for help with Glenville State.

Supporters of the school say the institution serves a highly under-served area of the state.
