ROANE SUSPECT DEAD IN OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR WALTON

2/23/2019 - Roane County Sherrif's Department has released the name of the suspect killed in Friday's officer involved shooting.

Deputies say 28-year-old Timothy Rhodes of Looneyville was killed in an officer-involved shooting near Walton.

2/22/2019 7 PM - The suspect in an officer-involved shooting near Walton has died, Roane County Sheriff Todd Cole said.

It happened around 4:45 p.m. Friday along Ambler Ridge Road off US 119.

Cole said the suspect was shot after he got his hands on the deputy's firearm.

Cole said a deputy nearby responded to a report of a vehicle spinning and kicking rocks onto a house.

The deputy told the driver of the vehicle to exit. A woman passenger in the vehicle obeyed. The deputy further instructed the driver to leave the vehicle, according to the sheriff.

The driver finally cooperated, but as the deputy attempted to handcuff the suspect, a struggle began.

Cole said the man then lunged at the deputy and brought him to the ground. During the struggle, Cole said the man reached for the deputy's gun. The deputy then fired a shot at the man, killing him. The deputy will be placed on leave.

The officer was not injured.

2/22/2019 5:30 PM - West Virginia State Police said a suspect was wounded in an officer-involved shooting in Roane County.

Troopers said a shooting Friday evening on Ambler Ridge Road involved a Roane County deputy and a suspect. The suspect was wounded.

No deputies were injuried.

The suspect is being transported to the hospital with unknown injuries.

It is not currently known what the situation was that led to the shooting.

Ambler Ridge is off US 119 near Walton.
