WACO DENIED QUARRY PERMIT - Second Time Around

(01/31/2003)
The state Surface Mine Board has refused for a second time to allow a Waco Oil and Gas of Glenville to open a sandstone quarry in a scenic area of Pocahontas County.

Residents complained that the project would cause problems in Knapps Creek, a popular trout stream and a source of water for Marlinton. They also complained it would be an eyesore.

The board issued an order upholding the Department of Environmental Protection's decision to refuse a permit to the company, principally owned by I. L. Morris.

The board said public opposition had nothing to do with its decision, which was based on environmental protection measures to the stream.

The company has been seeking to mine a 76-acre quarry along WV 39 near Huntersville, an area frequently passed by tourists.

The application was denied in July, 2002, and Waco appealed to the Surface Mine Board.

Waco can appeal to circuit court.
