Nine volunteers from Calhoun, Wood, Roane, Ritchie, Putnam and Kanawha counties traveled to the Myrtle Beach, SC, area to help with flood recovery efforts November 4th through 9th.

The volunteers are members of The ABM (American Baptist Men) Disaster Relief of WV team which frequently participates in recovery work in West Virginia and other states.

Pastor John Vannoy, a Calhoun native, is the Coordinator of WV ABM team activities. He and the group, including Grantsville residents Roger and Linda Jarvis, were provided lodging at the Myrtle Beach Community Church in Conway, SC, with a group of volunteer workers from a Michigan church.

Work projects were assigned by local authorities through Beach Church personnel. Two jobs were performed by the WV workers. The first was the removal of floor coverings and sub-flooring from a house and the second was removal of contents of a house followed by the removal of drywall.

This house was near the Waccamaw River and was constructed on eight feet high concrete block piers. The flood water level reached approximately twelve feet above ground.

A resident of the Conway area, Tammy Love (a Samaritan's Purse volunteer), asked to join the work group and was very helpful during her two day participation.

The work accomplished puts the homeowners a step closer in the repair of their houses. There is no cost to the owners, all work is done as a ministry by the ABM Disaster Relief organization.
