BILL SETS SOME SAFETY STANDARDS FOR ATV'S - Can Be Ridden On Roads Without A Line

(01/29/2003)
The Senate Judiciary Committee has passed an ATV safety bill, but recreational industry officials say it does not go far enough. The bill keeps ATV's off main roads with a "line down the middle," requires riders under 18 to wear helmets, take a safety course and prohibits riders under 17 from carrying passengers.

State Recreational Vehicles Association Director Leff Moore says the bill is weak. Moore says every ATV carries a sticker saying the vehicle should not be operated on a paved road, but the Senate bill says "go ahead."

Governor Wise called on the legislature to adopt ATV legislation because of a rash of accidents and deaths involving children. There are an estimated 140,000 ATVs in West Virginia.

Senator Jon Hunter says, "It's probably as good a bill as we could get out of this committee."
