Herman Frederick Nutter 94 of Glenville

Herman Frederick Nutter 94 of Glenville, WV (Kanawha Drive Community) graduated to heaven at 1:03 pm Thursday, October 4, 2018 at the United Hospital Center in Bridgeport WV, following an extended illness.

He was born October 25, 1923 in the Leopards Run Community of Braxton County WV, son of the late Arthur and Carrie Gerwig Nutter.

Herman was a graduate of Normantown High School, class of 1946. He was a United States Army veteran having served during World War II. Herman served his country well and proud from April 1943 until December 1945. While in the military, he served during the invasion of France, the invasion of Germany, and the Battle of the Bulge. During his time in Europe, Herman proudly served under General George Patton and General Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Herman had quite a few jobs over the years. He worked for Forbes Construction Company, building the road from Cedarville to Copen, Glenn L. Martins Aircraft in Baltimore, MD (1960-1968). He worked as a route salesman for Capitol Bakers (1960-1968) and after returning to West Virginia, he was a night watchman at Glenville State College, until the job terminated in 1972. He then became a substitute bus driver and then a regular bus driver for the Gilmer County Board of Education until he had his first heart attack in 1975. Not long after that, he began working for the Department of Highways, having retired in 1986.

In his spare time, Herman was an avid bowler, hunter, and gardener. He loved to garden, plus he would plow 10-12 gardens for family and friends around the community each year. He raised a garden every year until 2017, when his health began to fail.

Herman is a Baptist by faith and has been a very active member of the Little Kanawha Independence Church in Burnsville for 38 years. He and Onidee have loved being a part of the Church, and want to thank each and every member for their thoughtfulness and compassion over the last 40 years.

On February 12, 1949 Herman was united in marriage to Onidee Reed Nutter. Their love and beautiful union lasted for 69 years and 7 months.

Along with his loving wife, Herman is survived by a granddaughter, Heather Weaver and husband Jeremy of Fredericksburg, OH; 3 great-grandsons, Zion, Tristian, and Ryker Weaver all of Fredericksburg, OH; 4 sisters, Lena Grace Rogers, Madeline Greenleaf, and Ernestine Sigman (Charles) all of Akron, OH; and Rachael Burke of Fairdale, WV; 1 brother-in-law, David L. Reed and wife Jaunita of Belair, MD; and 1 sister-in-law, Mary Vines of Villages, FL.

Also surviving are a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other family and friends.

Along with his parents, Herman is preceded in death by his son, Frederick L. "Fred" Nutter; 1 brother, Robert Nutter, and 1 sister, Erma Lee Chaplin; 5 brothers-in-law; 1 sister-in-law, and one nephew.

A funeral service will be conducted at the Little Kanawha Independence Church in Burnsville at 1:00 pm, Tuesday, October 9, 2018 with Rev. Ronzel Roberts and Rev. Norris Belcher officiating. Burial will follow in the Frederick-Gerwig Cemetery on Toms Run (Braxton Co.) with Full Military honors provided by the United States Army and the Lewis County Honor Guard. Friends will be received from 5-8 pm Monday evening at the mortuary in Glenville and 1 hour prior to services at the church in Burnsville.
