STAND OFF - West Virginia State Police are investigating after a man was fatally shot by officers during a hostage situation Thursday in Fayette County.

William Cox, 45, was fatally shot after making threats against a woman's life and pointing a gun toward officers, according to a news release from state police.

State police say a trooper and Fayette County deputies responded to the situation Thursday morning on Okey L. Patteson Road in the Scarbro area. Cox was holding a woman against her will inside the home, the release said.

Troopers tried to negotiate the woman's release when Cox made threats against her life. Troopers say Cox then raised a gun at the officers and they shot him multiple times.

Cox died at the scene. No officers were injured.

Cox's body has been sent to the State Medical Examiner for an autopsy.
