James Chester Smith, 97, of Spencer

James Chester Smith, 97, of Spencer, died Saturday, September 15, 2018 at Roane General Hospital, Spencer.

He was born March 9, 1921 at Spencer, the son of the late James D. and Nancy Brannon Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Beulah Mardell Ferrell Smith; sisters, Macel Griffith, Thelma Griffith, Lenore West, Madeline West and Dorma West; brothers, Carmie Smith, Mayford Cleo Smith and an infant brother, Delmar Smith; half-brother, Vanus Miller.

Chester was a retired employee of the City of Spencer Water Department, a World War II veteran and a member of the Rush Creek Baptist Church near Spencer.

Survivors include his caregivers (a special nephew and niece), Douglas and Angala West of Spencer; many other nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great grandnieces and great grandnephews.

He will be missed by family, friends and neighbors.

A graveside service was conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 18 at the Eventide Cemetery, Spencer, with the Rev. Larry Jones officiating. Military honors were accorded by the Jackson County Honor Guard.

There was no visitation.
