MOUNTAINEERS' HONOR - A Book By John Michael Jarvis

(01/23/2003)
This is a story of the American Civil War in West Virginia and Virginia, a clash of family heritage, in a time when Mountaineers marched the breadth of the Shenandoah in the name of honor. Whether a Johnny Reb in the partisan rangers, or a Billy Yank marching with the infantry, families drew their lines in the hills to make their stand. With cannon fire echoing in the holler and the cries of the Rebel Yell, their success or failure would shape the generations to come. These are the lives of three converging West Virginia families Engle, Jarvis, and Martin from the Kanawha River to Little Sandy River. Families steeped in patriotism, honor bound to defend their highlands.

Moutaineers' Honor

A book by John Michael Jarvis was born in 1952 in Charleston, West Virginia. He grew up an Air Force "Brat" in Hampton, Virginia, Wendover, Utah, Rantoul, Illinois, Daytona Beach, Florida, Folkston, Georgia, and Jacksonville, Florida. He graduated Ohio Institute of Technology in 1973.

For eight years he served his country, as had his father, John Herbert Jarvis, in the U. S. Air Force; a S/Sgt repairing and instructing Avionic Sensor Systems. Upon separation, he has worked for International Laser Systems, Litton Lasers, Martin Marietta, and Lockheed Martin.

As a devoted family historian, John met and spoke with many friends and relatives that shared their knowledge of their extended families. His friendship and correspondence with his distant cousin, Sibyl Jarvis Pischke, whose books The Legend of Mammy Jane and Ashes of War and Roses, inspired him to start writing the family history.

His love of historical fiction led John to write short stories of the family that were well received by family members. Most notably, another distant cousin, Sharon Jarvis Spingler encouraged him, to write this large epic of his Civil War Ancestors.

He and his wife, Nancy, live with open doors to their children and grandchildren in Radcliff, Kentucky.
