John A. Workman, 88, of Spencer

John A. Workman, 88, of Spencer, West Virginia, went home to be with the Lord on August 14, 2018.

He was born June 24, 1930, to the late Jay and Mamie Thompson Workman.

He was a 1948 graduate of Spencer High School and was retired with 35 years of service from Columbia Gas as a heavy equipment operator.

John was a faithful member and deacon of the Gilboa Baptist Church of Grace Community and past member and deacon of Hurricane Baptist Church of Clio. He loved teaching Sunday School for many years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Norman Fred Workman and two sisters, Janet Needs and Evelyn LaBombard.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Betty Ashley Workman and their three children, Jim (Paula) Workman, Debbie (Mike) Kelly and Dean (Priscilla) Workman all of Spencer. Also blessed to call him Papaw are seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren whom he loved dearly. He is also survived by one sister Frances Knapp and a special aunt Wilma Hilton along with several nieces and nephews.

All those who knew John realized that he loved the Lord, his family and life on the farm.

There will be a viewing from 2:00-4:00 pm on Saturday August 18, 2018 at the Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home in Spencer. Graveside services with Pastor Larry Greathouse will immediately follow at the Eventide Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Gideons International.

A traditional funeral service will not be held as John preached his funeral on a daily basis in the way he lived his life to everyone who knew him.
