(01/21/2003)
Many people in Calhoun County and the area are community minded, generous and dedicated. The Hur Herald staff would like to recognize those individuals and groups for all they do. We ask our readers to submit names of individuals or groups, along with a brief description of why they are Shining Stars.

I have two major shining stars to tell you about. I moved to Fairmont on a hope and a prayer to go back to school. Not ever knowing what I needed to do or how to do it. I have had the help of my parents Joyce and Gerald Riddle. I say that they are shining stars because, they have helped me beyond the point of parenting help. Most parents I know want you to pay them back when they give you money or to learn lessons from what they do. Mine are very loving, giving and understanding. They have stood behind me throughout a lot of things that I have done in my life.

Another two I would like to commend are my grand parents. Ronzel and Georgia Lott. They are just the same. They also are very giving, loving and stand behind me...I am very lucky to have these four people in my life. We have an understanding. We help each other because, that is the way it should be. If one of us has something the other needs, we are glad to give it. That is just how we are.

But most of all they are my shining stars because they have never turned me away and they have never shunned me. I know some parents and grandparents who have done that very thing. I may not be a rich person, but I am rich in the fact that I have the love of these people and that makes things a whole lot easier...Jody Davis

Judy Brannon and Lisa Purvis, known as Angel 1 and Angel 2 at Grantsville Volunteer Fire Department. These girls are pretty much a team. At station 100 we call them the "Fire Angel's" . These two wonderful ladies donate a lot of time to the fire dept. and the ambulance service with out them it would not be the same. So please name the two of them as shining stars for all the hard work they do for emergency services. I can't think of a team of people who deserve the award any more than these two fine ladies...Ed Tingler

To the ladies at Victory Baptist Church who visit the Long Term Care Unit at MHHCC, every Monday morning. Winter, Summer, Spring, and Fall they have never missed a day. Singing, reading, and just listening. These are a very dedicated group of women. A shining star award may not seem like much, but to the residents you have brought love, joy, and your faith to them in their declining years...Barbara Allen

Let's salute another Shining Star, our local electrician, Art Bell. Dedicated to serving those in time of need anytime of day, he is especially dedicated to the growing of our community hospital, keeping it running smoothly on a daily basis. I personally devote a Shining Star to him, in the highest of honors, to thank him for all he's taught me, showing me patience and respect, for all the love he gives not just to his family, but to his hometown friends and neighbors, and for caring about all the wonders of the earth beneath his feet, if it weren't for you, I'm afraid my world would have never been as wonderful without you in it. Happy Anniversary Artie B. Bell, may our next 28 years be as enriched...Christopher Bell

A SECOND SHINING STAR - I would like to submit The late Doyle Ballengee for this award. As My twin brother Dr.. Russell wrote, Doyle was the best Brother In Law a person could have. Doyle traveled the county helping people that were in need. Doyle would visit people and if he saw they were struggling he would give them a $20 or $50 bill depending on the need he felt was warranted at the time. Doyle was a Church builder. He was truly concerned about his fellow man. He cared for those that were down and out as Jesus did. He visited those in prison and ministered to them. He was there when someone needed him and he seemed to know when they did need him. All the things I have stated can be verified by his beloved church the Victory Baptist Church in Grantsville...Cleo Everson
