Hoy Creed Barton, 100, of Glenville

Hoy Creed Barton age 100 of Glenville, WV (Kanawha Drive Community) departed this life in the early morning hours of Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston, WV.

He was born October 8, 1917 in Gilmer County, son of the late Willie and Maude Radabaugh Barton.

Creed is a graduate of Glenville High School, class of 1935. After the start of WWII, Creed enlisted in the United States Army, where he trained to be a Fighter Pilot. During his time in the Army, he flew such planes as the P47, PT13, BT13, AT6, C78, P51 Mustang, and the P38. After his honorable discharge, Creed remained in the Air Force Reserves and eventually obtained the rank of Captain.

Creed worked for the Department of Highways as a heavy equipment operator from 1957 until his retirement in 1979. Creed has remarked several times that he wished he had stayed in the Air Force and retired, but his mother was afraid something would happen to him and he decided to come home. Serving his country was very rewarding to him and if he could go back in time, he would not hesitate to join the Air Force again.

On January 25, 1944 Creed was united in marriage to Nancy Wolfe Barton. They celebrated 57 years of marriage before her passing on June 23, 2001.

Surviving is his daughter, Brenda McCartney and husband Jack of Newberne, WV; and 2 sisters-in-law, Goldine and Wilda Barton of Glenville. Also surviving are a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family and friends.

Along with his wife and parents, Creed is preceded in death by 2 brothers, Willie A. "Johnie" Barton and Troy Barton.

A funeral service will be conducted at the Ellyson Mortuary, Inc 2 Vanhorn Drive, Glenville WV at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 21, 2018 with Rev. Ronzel Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in the Meadow Lane Cemetery near Glenville with Full Military Honors provided by the United States Army and the Lewis County Honor Guard. Friends will be received from 5-8 p.m. Friday evening at the Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers the family request memorial contributions be made in Creed's honor to the Gilmer County Fire Department or the Gilmer County Senior Citizen Center.
