Burning Springs in Wirt County is barely a blip in the nation's history books, ignoring that it was the place "Where It All Began," well-documented in David McKain's illustrious book about the Rathbone Well and the Little Kanawha River discovery of oil and gas.

McKain said he learned well how difficult it was to change the nation's history books, which say the discovery was made in Pennsylvania.

McKain, the late founder and curator of the WV Oil and Gas Museum in Parkersburg and other historic sites, including Burning Springs, went to his grave with that knowledge, being the primary researcher and writer of oil and gas history in West Virginia.

We recognize his thousands of hours devoted to researching, writing, collecting and archiving.
