THIS OLE HOUSE - Bennett Family Dwelling Of Grantsville

(04/19/2025)

Jacob Bennett and Maggie Bennett Grantsville early comers, marriage in 1875 in Gilmer Co.

By Bob Weaver

This ole house on High Street, Grantsville, near the old Grantsville Grade School, is one of Grantsville's oldest dwellings.

For much of the early 20th Century it was owned and occupied by Jacob (1846-1937) and Margaret "Maggie" Gainer Bennett (1852-1951).

Jacob was the son of Jessie (Jesse)Bennett of Gilmer Co.

She was the daughter of Patrick and Mollie Fling Bennett of Gilmer County.

House was likely built about 1900

They both lived to be very aged, with the 1900 census showing they had four children in the household: Johnson M Bennett, 23; Annabell Bennett, 20; Jessie M. Bennett, 18; Clara Bennett, 8.

They are buried in Bethlehem Cemetery.

The relatively large two story house has fallen into disrepair in 2018, but still has a good view of High Street from the two-sided porch.
