CMS STUDENTS HOUCHIN AND JETT RECOGNIZED AT DAR CEREMONY

(L-R) Ruth Mooney, Mia Houchin, Meg Ashby DAR members with Jaeyln Jett Submitted by Dan Cosgrove Mia Houchin and Jaeyln Jett were recognized by the Elk River Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution [DAR] for their 1st place finish in the DAR annual American History Essay Contest. Students were recognized with certificates and medals at a meeting of the Elk River Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Gassaway on March 11, followed by a reception. Houchin was the 6th grade winner, while Jett was the 7th grade winner. Their essays have been forwarded for state-wide judging. The American History Essay Contest was established to encourage young people to think creatively about our nation's great history and learn about history in a new light. Essays are judged for historical accuracy, adherence to the topic, organization of materials, interest, originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and neatness. This year's topic was: The end of World War I was the beginning of a new age. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War. Imagine you are living in 1918. State where you are living and how the end of the war will impact your daily life. Discuss the pros and cons of the changes this War introduced to society and how you imagine those changes will impact the United States in the years to come.
