GLENVILLE STATE FACING CUTS - WVU Will Cut $22 Million, Marshall $7 Million

(01/12/2003)
State spending cuts are digging into the operations and programs of higher education.

Resigning Glenville State College President, Dr. Thomas Powell said GSC will be eliminating 15-18 positions.

Glenville State has laid off its Human Resource and Continuing Education directors, in addition to a campus security officer.

Powell said the college has eliminated five vacancies, and more job cuts are expected.

"I've been here four years, and all we've done is cut, cut, cut," said Powell, who has indicated there is a long range goal to close the college.

West Liberty College will lay off 36 non-faculty workers and hours will be reduced for other employees.

The ten-percent cut did not apply to community colleges, but WVU is facing a $22 million reduction and Marshall is facing a $7 million cut.
