ACCUSED MURDERER HAD FINANCIAL PROBLEMS - Jones Admits To Both Killings

Police told area newspapers they believe a Calhoun County man who allegedly killed two elderly Roane County men was in need of cash to take care of bad checks he and his girlfriend had written.

Roger Eric Jones and his girlfriend had written multiple bad checks in both Calhoun and Roane County.

Jones was charged Wednesday with first-degree murder in the beating death of 83-year-old Oral "Sam" Jett of Clendenin. State Police plan to file first-degree murder charges against Jones for the December 28 death of John Garner Morehead, 68, of Spencer, whose body was discovered in his burning mobile home.

"I think this boy just had a lot of financial problems," Roane County Sheriff Todd Cole told a Charleston newspaper.

Cole said Jones, who knew both men previously, gave him a statement in which he admitted to both murders.

Jones got very little cash from the two elderly men. "It just doesn't make any sense," said Cole.

He is being held without bond in Central Regional Jail.
