James Hampton Bower, known in Calhoun as Sidder Bower, must have been proud of his mighty hog to have his picture taken with the animal. Bower was born in 1914 and died in 1976.

Historical Hog Knob got its name in the 1800s related to packs of free roaming hogs that wandered from the Knob to the Little Kanawha River for nearly a century.
