Joan Marie Miller Dodd. 87, of Charleston

Joan Marie Miller Dodd. 87, of Charleston, formerly of Spencer, died peacefully on January 18 after a long illness. Joan was born in Columbus, Ohio, on August 20, 1930, the daughter of Lester J. and Marie Medley Miller. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved brother, John Lewis Miller, and sisters-in-law Susan Bruere Miller and Joan Higgs Miller.

Joan is survived by the love of her life, Chester Curtin Dodd, Jr., of Charleston, whom she met while attending The Ohio State University and married on December 17, 1949.

She is also survived by three daughters: Margaret Joan "Jody" Cottrill of Atlanta, Linda Ann (Robert) Fluharty of Charleston, and Kathryn Marie Hunt of Spencer; her brother William L. Miller (Mitzi) of Dublin, Ohio; 11 grandchildren: Justin, Beth (Chen), Anne and Chris Cottrill, John, Megan, Michael, Robert and David Fluharty, and Chris (Crystal) and Jamie Hunt; two cherished great-grandchildren: Madison Hunt and Garrett Hunt; her sisters- and brothers-in-law Barbara and Joe Starcher, Margie and Bob Barnes and Patty and Steven Dodd, and many cherished nieces and nephews.

Joan's enduring legacy is the hundreds of children she loved and worked with as a kindergarten teacher's aide in the Roane County schools for 25 years.

The family thanks the staff at Marmet Center who took such good care of Joan for so many years.

Visitation will be at St. John's United Methodist Church in Spencer from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 27, followed by services at 2:30 p.m. Rev. Art Tucker and Rev. David Hall will officiate. Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the C. C.
