GROUNDBREAKING TODAY ON $94 MILLION CALHOUN COMPRESSOR STATION - "Not A Day Too Soon"

By Bob Weaver Jan. 2018 After a considerably long effort by the Calhoun Commission, the groundbreaking on the $94 million TransCanada White Oak compressor station in northern Calhoun is set for today at 1 p.m., according to commission president Kevin Helmick. At one time it appeared that the station would be located in Ritchie County, its location and taxation the subject of long dickering. Officials from TransCanada and their associates will gather on the remote property in Calhoun near the Ritchie line for the official ceremony, which the public is invited to attend. The station is located a few miles off the Leading Creek Road, whose access today is somewhat difficult with snow, ice and road construction. TransCanada has said construction of the massive project will begin the following day, saying it is expected to be completed in 2018. Tax receipts from the project is expected to be about $400,000 annually for the county in about two years. "Getting the tax money will not be a day too soon," said commissioner Helmick. "We are suffering shortfalls on nearly all fronts, from the regional jail bill and employee benefit packages to a reasonable salary for deputy sheriffs and just about everything else," he said.
