FIRE DESTROYS VACANT WIRT DWELLING - Arson Suspicioned

(09/21/2017)
Wirt authorities say a fire that destroyed an unoccupied residence in Newark, Wirt County Tuesday evening might have been arson.

Elizabeth Fire Chief Steven Settle says the West Virginia State Fire Marshal's Office had been called in to investigate the blaze.

The fire was at 134 Hemlock Street in the Little Kanawha Estates subdivision in Newark and was called in about 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Settle says the unoccupied structure was fully involved before firefighters arrived. Crews remained on the scene cleaning up for more than four hours.

He says arson is suspected because no one lived there and because no utilities were turned on.

The Elizabeth and Eastwood fire departments responded.
