West Virginia has the Mountaineers, lots of scenic beauty and is known in many circles as Almost Heaven.

But residents in the state celebrated every time John Denver's "Country Roads" plays on the radio are not very happy, according to a study by WalletHub.

The study ranks West Virginia dead last in the country at No. 50 in 2017's Happiest States in America. Ohio is listed at 36th and Kentucky at 44th.

The state, per capita, ranks among the highest states with addiction, and voted more heavily for Donald Trump.

Analysts looked at 38 key metrics, ranging from depression rate to sports participation rate to income growth. The Mountain State was 47th when it comes to the highest share of adult depression. West Virginia's emotional and physical well-being rank was 49th, work environment rank was 48th and community and environment rank was 31st.

Finishing at the bottom two spots just above West Virginia respectively were Oklahoma and Louisiana.

The top three states in the Happiest States in America list were Minnesota, Utah and Hawaii.
