(01/04/2003)
Arnoldsburg School principal Donna Burge-Tetrick says "We are very proud of our students who won in the Character Education Essay Contest. We will be submitting their stories in the following weeks. This week, we will start with 3rd grade, 1st place winner, Barrett Evans. Barrett also was the only student from Calhoun County to place at the State Level. His essay was 3rd in the state."

CARING, RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS

By Barrett Evans
First Place, 3rd Grade, Arnoldsburg School
Third Place in State of West Virginia

Since the events of September 11, I have heard the word "citizen" many times on the news. Well, just what is a good citizen? I believe good citizens should above all be patriotic. Also, responsible citizens should keep the earth clean and they should also obey the laws.

First of all, being patriotic is the most important way we can be responsible citizens. Patriotic citizens should always show respect for the flag. "Old Glory" represents the freedom we have today. When the flag is folded, being raised, or displayed, we should remember everyone who fought to make us free.

Secondly, responsible citizens keep our earth clean. We need to pick up trash, recycle, and don't pollute our water or air. If we spoil our earth now, our future citizens will not be able to live on earth and enjoy its beauty.

Last, caring citizens should obey laws. Our many laws such as obeying speed limits, gun laws, and not drinking and driving were created to protect citizens. If we did not have laws, our country would be a terrible place to live.

I would like for everyone to be good caring, citizens by being patriotic, keeping our earth clean, and obeying laws. If we do these things, the United States of America will become an even better place to live not only for us now, but for everyone in years to come.
