Singer and songwriter Carl Jay Volkwein, 62, of Orma has died after a long fight with epilepsy and complications, he is the husband of writer and photographer Maggie Volkwein.

Born in Bellevue PA, he worked in the family steel factory in Pittsburgh out of high school, driving the steel truck, welding and making diamond mesh woven wire.

In 1981 he and wife of 38 years moved to south Calhoun County, where he enjoyed camping, hiking with his dog, and pot luck dinners with friends. His favorite thing to do was boating, especially whitewater rafting.

"Carl Jay was handsomer than Elvis and sang twice as well. He could see in the dark, lift three hundred pounds, and could play the Nutcracker Suite on the harmonica," said his wife.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his mother Eleanor Viney, brother Terry Viney, and lots of cousins, in-laws, and real good friends. A Memorial will be held on June 17.
