1/28/2017 - Gov. Jim Justice, speaking about revamping WV's educational bureaucracy, including the elimination of RESAs, said "We've got 600 classrooms in this state that can't even field a teacher. "We've got to get the bureaucrats out of the way. We've got to worry about our kids getting an A through F versus our schools getting an A through F. We've got to listen to people on the ground instead of trying to administer from Charleston when we don't have a clue what's going on and we have proven — we have proven — we know how to be last."

Hundreds of WV teachers are teaching subject matter for which they have no academic degrees, and the teachers, despite one of the largest expenditures on education, are among the lowest paid in the USA.

1/27/2017 -WalletHub's latest study places West Virginia students as the least educated in the USA.

Most Americans believe a good education is the ticket to a better future and that college opens doors to better career opportunities, higher earnings and new social connections, among other benefits.

Generally, the higher the level of education one attains, the more income potential grows and the lower chances of unemployment become.

In this study, WalletHub's analysts examined the key determinants of a well-educated population: educational attainment, school quality, and achievement gaps between genders and races.

The study compared all 50 states across 11 total metrics grouped by category.

Calhoun Schools are saying that student achievement is improving, although the current metrics of performance measures numerous in other areas besides academic to reach a performance level.

In 2011, Calhoun Schools appeared to be among the worst performing school systems in West Virginia, using the metrics of that time, while school officials maintain significant improvement.
