CLAY LAWSUIT PENDING? - The Clay Communicator says it looks as if the County is heading into another lawsuit. This time the issue is whether the Clay Commission can appoint a prosecutor instead of holding an election, after the current prosecutor resigned. Clay commissioners voted not to hold a special election.

STATE WINS WITH LOTTERY - Governor Bob Wise is pleased that the state will receive an extra $11 million in tax money from Powerball Whittaker's jackpot. That's more than a third of the projected $30 million shortfall the administration is trying to fill in the current state budget.

LEWIS DELEGATE SWITCHES TO HOLD SEAT - Delegate Douglas Stalnaker of Lewis County has switched his party registration from Republican to Democrat to keep a seat on the influential Finance Committee.

Republicans in the 2003 House of Delegates will have one fewer member than they'd anticipated.

VERIZON WILL PROVIDE LONG DISTANCE SERVICE - State regulators have approved Verizon's bid to sell long-distance service in West Virginia.

Verizon wants to enter West Virginia's long-distance market, where it has been shut out since the breakup of the Bell System in the early 1980s. During public hearings last month, Verizon competitors complained that the company has failed to open its local network to competition.

FORTY YEAR OLD ROAD PROPOSAL RESURRECTED -Representatives of several counties met earlier this month to discuss a renewed lobbying effort on behalf of a proposed upgrade of U.S. 33 between the Ohio River and I-79. Interest has been increased by recent highway upgrades in Ohio. The highway would connect with the William S. Ritchie Bridge in Ravenswood, sometimes called the "bridge to nowhere."

The Blue-Gray Trail was proposed in the 1960's as a way to open the area for travel and economic opportunities. It now might become formal with the creation of a highway authority to promote construction, much like the L-K Parkway, which has been on the drawing board for many years.

PA TROOPERS SHOOT 12-YEAR-OLD - Pittsburgh Coroner Cyril Wecht said an autopsy showed that a 12-year-old Uniontown PA boy who died following a police chase was shot in the back, leaving his family with questions as to what happened.

Michael Ellerbe was shot and killed following what police said was a stolen vehicle chase Tuesday afternoon. The youth crashed the vehicle after a one-mile chase and tried to run away.

16-YEAR-OLD GIRL ARRESTED FOR MURDER -A 16-year-old Marion County girl charged with murdering her mother and her mother's boyfriend will appear in Marion County Circuit Court. The preliminary hearing for Crystal Nicole Eagle, a North Marion High School student, will be presided over by Marion County Chief Circuit Court Judge David R. Janes.

She was arrested Sunday morning after State Police went to the family's trailer home to make a welfare check on the couple. Their bodies were discovered in shallow graves.

POLICE CAMERAS PROTECT THE FACTS - West Virginia State Police have received $145,000 to purchase additional video cameras for police cruisers. Senior Trooper Jay Powers, State Police spokesman, said in-car video cameras record many of the activities surrounding traffic stops and can also be used for investigative purposes. "Especially in the unfortunate incident of a trooper being assaulted, the cameras enable us to visibly see the perpetrators. It is a good evidentiary tool," Powers said.

Lt. G.E. McCabe, State Police communications director, said that in addition to the grant, "I've already placed orders for 50 new cameras out of the general revenue fund."

The Hur Herald is attempting to learn if a sting operation conducted by a the Parkersburg Violent Crimes and Narcotics, Drug Task Force was recorded on video tape, a customary procedure in undercover operations. An officer of the group shot and killed Bryan Paul Causey after he attempted to flee from the sting and reportedly tried to run over officers.

Materials associated with the manufacture of methamphetamines were found in the back of Causey's truck, according to Wood County Prosecutor Ginny Conley.
