DEMOCRACY IN ACTION

Following the hubris of the 2016 presidential election, more US voters could stay away from the polls.

In the 2012 presidential election, eligible voter turnout was 53.6 percent.

Among the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development's member countries -- all democracies with free markets - the United States ranks 31st out of 35, according to the Pew Research Center.

West Virginia, during previous presidential elections, had the lowest turn-out among the states.

Globally, 73 countries have better voter turnout than the United States.
