COTTRELL SHOT, KILLED AFTER THREAT TO POLICE IN ROANE COUNTY - Mental Hygiene Warrant Being Served

UPDATE 9/7/2016 - West Virginia State Police say Bernard Cottrell, 65, of Reedy, was involved in an incident at a relative's home where he brandished and discharged a firearm in Mineral Wells.

Cottrell then took off and a BOLO was issued by Wood County dispatch.

Roane deputies received information from a family member of Cottrell, saying the family was in the process of getting a mental hygiene petition in Roane County, due to the fact he was a threat to himself and others.

Deputies and troopers saw Cottrell driving on route 14 near Spencer Tuesday afternoon, while they were on patrol, then attempting to make a traffic stop, which led to a pursuit.

The pursuit ended on Route 14 at Randolph Road, troopers indicating Cottrell then pointed a gun at officers and the officers discharged their weapons due to the threat.

In one press statement, police are indicating that Cottrell opened fire on the officers, but later reports indicated that did not happen.

Cottrell died at the scene.

No other information has been released with the WV State Police investigating the death.

ORIGINAL STORY 9/6/2016 -A Roane County person was shot and killed by officers after that person reportedly opened fire on the officers Tuesday afternoon about 3 p.m.

Lt. Michael Baylous, spokesman for the State Police, said reports indicate the suspect died in the shooting that occurred in the Billings Route 14 and Randolph Road area.

No officers were injured in the incident.

Baylous said troopers were with another agency serving a mental hygiene petition when the person fired shots.

No other details available Tuesday night.
