MOCCASIN RANGERS ROSTER INCLUDED MANY PROMINENT CALHOUN EARLY COMERS

(10/23/2023)
The Moccasin Rangers, organized in Calhoun WV, was an band of southern sympathizers who were blood-letting marauders who roamed the region during the Civil War creating mayhem and committing murder, often used by some of "county leaders" to reign over early settlers.

The roster list will likely include names of many modern day descendants still living in Calhoun County.

Today they would be labeled as radicalized terrorists, who, while clinging to a cause, where more often self-serving criminals following violent leaders.

Not included in the list is the famous fighter Nancy Hart, girlfriend of Perry Connolly.

Report of Men Captured in December 1861 - from Calhoun, Roane and Wirt Counties:

27 Dec 1861 Wheeling Intelligencer Newspaper

Thirty four men were captured at Big bend, West Fork and at their homes in Wirt and Roane county by Capt Baggs and Major Trimble of the 11th (West) Virginia Regiment. "Most, if not all of whom, belonged to the somewhat notorious Moccasin rangers. We have no hesitation in saying they are the hardest looking set of vagabonds we ever saw. Some of them are lame, halt, and frosted, and there is scarcely a comfortable suit of clothes in the whole crowd. Among the number is the notorious Dan Dusky, who is said to have boasted that he had a little graveyard of his own in which he had buried a considerable number of Union men."
