Harley Levere "Herk" Downs, 74 - Arnoldsburg

Harley Levere "Herk" Downs, 74, of Arnoldsburg, WV passed away May 19, 2016 at St. Francis Hospital in Charleston after an extended illness.

He was born April 9, 1942 in Parkersburg, WV, the son of the late Vere and Amy Louise Downs.

He was a rural route carrier for the United States Postal Service. He retired in 2007 after more than 30 years of service. He was an avid history buff and possessed an expert knowledge of the American Civil War and World War II. He was a descendant of Major George Downs, who served Calhoun County during the Civil War.

He is survived by his wife, Connie Sue Downs of Arnoldsburg; daughter, Melody Ann Downs of Evans; brother, William (Bill) Downs and wife, Mary of Huntington; nephew, Martin Downs and family of Oregon; nephew, Dr. Matthew Downs and family of Wisconsin; niece, Paula Starcher and husband Fred of Arnoldsburg; great-nieces, Nicohle (Nickie) Ballard (husband Tyler and son Korbin) of Parkersburg; Samantha Starcher of Parkersburg; and Whitney Moss (husband Jeremy and daughter Caydence) of Arnoldsburg; and his dog Jenny, who enjoyed sharing breakfast with him every morning.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date after cremation. There will be no public service or visitation.

Arrangements are being handled the the Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home in Spencer.
