WIRT SPORTS FIGURE BOB SNIDER HAS DIED -A Hall Of Fame Kind Of Guy

One of the areas all-time sports figures has died. Robert W.(Bob) Snider, 69, of Elizabeth, died Monday in Camden-Clark Hospital.

He was a 1951 graduate of Wirt County High School, where he was a three-sport standout. He entered West Virginia University, where he was a four-year football letterman, and led WVU in punting, punt returns and interceptions. For more than 25 years, he held the WVU interception record, and was selected to the West Virginia University All-Time Team as a defensive back. In 1998, he was inducted in the Mid-Ohio Valley Sports Hall of Fame. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean Conflict.

He was a former surveyor for Monongahela Power Company and retired in 1990 from E.I. DuPont with more than 26 years of service. He was a beloved and active member of the Wirt County community. He was a longtime member of the Elizabeth Baptist Church, and was a deputy assessor in the Bill Thorn administration. He was a volunteer firefighter for Elizabeth-Wirt Volunteer Fire Department, and volunteer for Wirt County Emergency Services as an ambulance driver. He was an avid supporter of the Wirt Youth League Football program, having coached since 1972, and regularly supported the bingo fund raising efforts.

. He was a strong supporter of the Wirt County High School Tiger football team, having recently worked with the kicking team. He served on the Elizabeth City Council, and was an avid fisherman and lover of animals. He loved football and was a proud supporter of Wirt County High School, West Virginia University Mountaineers, and the Oakland Raiders. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Elizabeth Baptist Church, Elizabeth, with the Rev. Mark McCloy officiating. Burial will follow in the Knights of Pythias Cemetery, Elizabeth, where military honors will be rendered by representatives of the U.S. Army. Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, and from 9-11 a.m. Thursday at the Busch Funeral Home, Elizabeth. The body will lie in repose one hour prior to services Thursday at the church.
