TUESDAY DEADLINE FOR SENIORS TO APPLY PROMISE SCHOLARSHIP

Tuesday is the last day high school seniors to apply for the Promise Scholarship. In order to receive the annual award, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and fill out Promise forms by March 1. The Promise, which gives up to $4,750 to cover the cost of tuition and fees for qualifying high school graduates, is the state's largest financial aid award. It was created in 2002. "Since the Promise program started, more than $400 million has been provided to more than 35,000 West Virginia students from all 55 counties to attend public or independent college or university in the state," said Paul Hill, chancellor of the state Higher Education Policy Commission. "We encourage students to see if they're qualified and apply for this program, which represents a strong investment by the state in their future." Higher education officials say students should apply for the scholarship, even if they think they may not be eligible. To qualify for the Promise, students must have a 3.0 grade point average or maintain a B average and have at least a 22 composite score on the ACT or a 1020 combined math and reading score on the SAT. Even if a high school senior currently doesn't meet those requirements, they have the rest of the semester to increase their grades or improve their test scores. Students can continue taking the ACT and SAT until June 4 and June 11, which are the last test days in the Promise eligibility window.
