ABANDONED DOGS AND PUPPIES RESCUED IN ROANE COUNTY

(02/05/2016)
WOWK 13 NEWS = Roane County Humane Officer Tanya Hicks found nine puppies and two adult dogs along a back country road in the middle of Monday night. Three of the puppies were dead when Officer Hicks arrived after receiving a 911 call at 6 p.m.

Officer Hicks found a cardboard box filled with hay that had been taped shut in the middle of a deep water filled ditch, and it appeared the puppies had clawed their way out of the box. The puppies were huddled together on the cold wet snowy hay with severe hair loss. The ditch was near an abandoned home of Ferrell Road in Roane County.

Officer Hicks spent an hour trying to catch the adult dogs, before she was able to catch one of the dogs, the mother of some of the puppies.

The puppies and the adult dog were diagnosed with with sarcoptic mange, a treatable but very contagious condition. A veterinarian has treated both the puppies and the mother.

The puppies will be under the care of Roane County Animal Shelter until they are able to be rescued or adopted.
