A Ritchie County man is dead following a pursuit in Ritchie County, West Virginia early Saturday morning after investigators say he tried to run a trooper over.

Troopers say they tried to pull over Clarence Layfield, Jr., 55, for suspected drunk driving on Goose Creek Road, which then led to a pursuit in the Oil Springs Road area.

According to a press release, the trooper believed the pursuit was ending due to rough terrain. When he got out of his cruiser, Layfield began driving his car towards the trooper.

Investigators say the trooper then fired his gun at Layfield, who died at the scene.

A passenger in Layfield's car was not injured.

The incident is under investigation. Troopers say drugs were found in Layfield's car and he and his passenger had consumed a large amount of alcohol during the day
