H. Gladys Chapman, 93 - Spencer

H. Gladys Chapman, 93, of Spencer WV, formerly of Newton WV, passed away Tuesday, December 15, 2015 at home.

She was born October 10, 1922 at Newton, a daughter of the late Michael James and Anna Jane Moore Drake.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Lewis Chapman; sons, Harvey, Harlan and Holly Chapman; two great grandchildren; five brothers, Melvin, Orville, Lundy, Elmer and Dempsey Drake; three sisters, Viola "Sis" Parker, Nona Drake and Saphrona Roush.

Gladys was a homemaker and a lifelong resident of Roane County. She was a member of the Newton Baptist Church. Gladys enjoyed quilting, flower gardening and singing.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Wanda Jeffreys and George Wehner of London OH, Barbara and Lanty "Sauce" Nottingham of Temperance MI, Anna and Larry Shaw of Akron OH, Wilmalea and Bill Benson of Akron, Leona and Jim McCabe also of Akron, Harold and Maxine Chapman of Pigeon WV, Amy and Danny Cronin of Spencer; 19 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren and two great-great-great grandchildren; sister, Maggie Drake of Spencer; friend, who was as close as a sister, Carol Cronin of Spencer.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 21 at the Newton Baptist Church with the Rev. Ron Fisher officiating. Burial will be in the Chapman Cemetery, Newton.

The family will receive friends from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at the John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer and from noon until 1:00 p.m. Monday at the church.
