MAN SHOOTS SELF AFTER CHASE - A Mercer County man suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a police pursuit Saturday evening, according to state police who were called in by Princeton police to investigate.

The pursuit came after Princeton police attempted to stop James Hicks III, 25, of Princeton, for an expired registration on the truck he was driving.

The traffic stop occurred just before 10:30 p.m. on North Walker Road in Princeton. Hicks and a passenger inside the vehicle then fled the scene.

According to a criminal complaint, the truck headed down Route 20 and then stopped in the Grant's Supermarket parking lot in Glenwood. During the process, the passenger jumped out of the moving vehicle.

When police approached the driver in the parking lot, the suspect fired a total of six rounds. Five of them went through the roof of the truck and one struck Hicks, investigating troopers said.

A Princeton police officer thought Hicks was firing at him so he fired three rounds, state police said. Only one went into the cab. It did not hit Hicks.

Hicks was flown to CAMC General to be treated for his injuries. He was in stable condition Sunday.

State police are continuing to investigate the incident. Share this:
