UPDATE: FIREMEN HAVE THIRD FIREFIGHTING DAY - Calhoun's First Forest Fire Of Season

(11/16/2015)
UPDATE - Firemen returned Sunday to a forest fire on Laurel Run, the first of the season, for the third day in a row.

Firemen from Smithville and Gilmer County returned with members of the Grantsville VFD Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. and returned to the station at 6 p.m.

The woods are extremely dry after high winds swept across the area Thursday and Friday.

ORIGINAL STORY 11/14/15 - Firemen returned Saturday to Calhoun's first forest fire of the season on Laurel Run, the fire rekindling about 3 p.m.

The Grantsville, Smithville and Gilmer VFDs brought the fire under control by 6 p.m., creating a large fire break.

Fortunately, the high winds had quieted.

Reports of the acreage burned burned were from 15 to 50 acres.

The departments then responded to a forest fire on Dusk Camp in Gilmer County.

Laurel Run is just off State Rt. 5 east of Grantsville.

Weathercasters had warned about forest fire risks with a high wind advisory posted for most of the Mountain State for Thursday and Friday.

Friday, firemen from Grantsville, Upper West Fork, Gilmer, Smithville and Harrisville fought the blaze for about six hours.

A spokesperson said when the fire would be brought under control, high winds would whip it across the fire line.
