In 1890 the very first chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution was formed in Washington, DC. The four founders wanted an organization built on service in the areas of patriotism, education and historic preservation. Although there have been DAR chapters in West Virginia since 1899, Elk River Chapter in Gassaway was organized in 1972.

To celebrate the National Society's 125th Anniversary, the chapter held a community service event by sprucing up the Braxton County Family Research Library. At the regular monthly meeting, the chapter members learned abut the four accomplished founders. There are: Mary Desha (Kentucky), Mary Lockwood (New York), Ellen Walworth (Illinois) and Eugenia Washington (Charlestown, West Virginia).

In other chapter news, the members were reminded to bring to the next meeting new items being collected to help a homeless female veteran prepare for an apartment. In November, Vietnam veterans who are related to chapter members will be thanked for their service.

The two members who traveled the farthest were Janet Hyre Burnside from Kanawha County and Trish Hall Moore from Pennsylvania. Regent Mooney shared that four prospective members have submitted their application papers. In December, a Welcoming Ceremony will be held to welcome all 2015 new members.
