CHARLESTON WOMAN SHOT TO DEATH DOING GOOD DEED

UPDATE - Charleston Police arrested a man Tuesday night who is accused of murdering a woman early Tuesday morning.

Police arrested Matthew Roohollani on a first-degree murder charge for allegedly shooting Andrea Smith while she was checking on neighbors following another shooting at their home just before.

ORIGINAL STORY - Charleston police said the woman shot to death on the East End early Tuesday morning apparently knocked on the door of a home to check on the residents inside after she heard shots in the neighborhood and she was killed when she was mistaken for an intruder.

Police identified the victim as Adrena Smith, 22, of Charleston. They said she lives on nearby Twilight Drive and knocked on the door of 137 Lakin St. to check on the residents after shots were fired at the home.

One of the residents inside, Matthew Roohollai, fired the shots that struck Smith after he apparently thought the man who had fired shots at his home was trying to get inside the residence, police said.

Roohollai is a Kanawha County public defender.

Police said they are consulting with the Kanawha County Prosecutor's Office to determine whether any charges would be filed in the shooting death.

Meanwhile, police said the man who allegedly fired shots at the residence, Jonathan Gregory Bush, 32, of South Charleston is charged with one count of wanton endangerment. Police said a man at the residence said that someone had fired shots at the residence from a funeral home limousine.

Police arrested Bush at Preston Funeral Home, and said he had two guns in his waist band. A criminal complaint said that Bush told him that he had fired shots at the residence on several occasions and was attempting to scare away a man who was living with his girlfriend.

Bush was arraigned Tuesday morning in Kanawha County Magistrate Court and his bond was set at $250,000 cash only.

In another incident, West Virginia State Police said a man faces multiple charges after he allegedly threatened a clerk and customer with a knife and robbed a store.

Robert Allen Childress Jr., 38, of South Charleston is charged with robbery, malicious assault and traffic offenses. according to a criminal complaint filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court. State Police said a man entered Spiros with a woman Monday. He later came back holding a knife and demanding money.

The suspect grabbed a customer from behind and was holding a knife against her neck. She tried to grab the knife, and the suspect pushed her to the floor and said, "Don't move or I'll kill you," the complaint said.

He then pointed the knife at the clerk, grabbed the cash drawer and fled the store.

Childress is currently being held at the South Central Regional Jail.
