CALHOUN TEACHER CONTESTANT FOR "OUTSTANDING TEACHER OF AMERICAN HISTORY"

(10/05/2015)

Jill Mooney, American History Chairman for the
Elk River Chapter of the Daughters of the American
Revolution and Calhoun, History teacher, Dan Cosgrove

Dan Cosgrove, Calhoun County Middle/High School teacher, was speaker at the Elk River Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution meeting on September 20th in Gassaway, WV.

Mr. Cosgrove believes it is important to make American History relevant to the lives of his students. In doing so, students will understand and respect our country, flag and the United States Constitution.

He feels field trips to Charleston and Washington, D.C. are important. He wants his students to visit museums to see historical documents, as well as talk to state and national leaders.

Mr. Cosgrove encourages his students to participate in state and national history competitions. Recently at school, his students studied, memorized and recited the Preamble to the Constitution.

In the past his students have also learned The American's Creed. Mr. Cosgrove expands the textbook through these and other activities.

Dan Cosgrove will represent Elk River Chapter in the state-level, "Outstanding Teacher of American History" contest. In appreciation, Jill Mooney, Chapter American History Chairman, presented him with a subscription to the award winning, "American Spirit" magazine.
