NEWTON FIRE CHIEF FACING 27 COUNTS FOR FALSIFYING DOCUMENTS

(08/28/2015)
A Roane County fire chief is facing charges that he falsified the department's bank records.

Newton fire chief Sean McCarty, 45, is accused of altering bank statements before handing them over to Roane County Commissioners after they requested the documents.

McCarty has been the Newton chief since 1990.

Problems surfaced earlier this year regarding the Newton Fire Department billing fees to insurance companies for responses made on I-79, and possibly other incidents. The practice was an issue before the Roane County Commission.

According to the criminal complaint, security cameras captured images of McCarty producing the documents he gave to commissioners.

The complaint also says the documents were allegedly cut, taped and copied. They were reportedly missing several purchases, canceled checks and transactions.

McCarty faces 27 counts of falsifying accounts related to the levy account of the Newton Volunteer Fire Department for each month of April 2013 through June 2015.

McCarty's LinkedIn page indicates he works as a paramedic at Roane EMS and Minnie Hamilton EMS, Roane 911 and at the medical command for Westcom.
