(09/01/2015)
UPDATE - Calhoun Schools Superintendent Tim Woodward says the local school system will be releasing the latest overall data on Smarter Balanced testing of students following the next board meeting, after which it will be released to the public.

ORIGINAL STORY 8/24 - This years Smarter Balance test scores given last Spring to 175,000 West Virginia students, grade three through high school, are "permanently embargoed," according to Calhoun Superintendent of Schools Tim Woodward.

Some results, however, have been released by other counties, including Clay.

Kristen Powell, Communications Director with the WV Department of Education said, "Districts are permitted to release their preliminary Smarter Balanced results if they wish. They can also choose not to release their results until they're final (meaning they include those students who took an alternate assessment).

Powell said the final results will be available in October on a state website. We are leaving this decision up to the districts.

Smarter Balance has replaced Westest.

Counties will be making their own analysis of the the results this year.

State education officials have released a general statement about the results, saying proficiency in math and reading were below 50% with all grades included.

The initial report said only fifth graders scored 51% proficient in language arts and 30% in math.

Starting next year, each county school systems will be given a grade, A to F.
