FLOOD VICTIMS MAY NEED TETANUS VACCINE

(07/14/2015)
Parkersburg, WV - Flood victims may need to get a tetanus vaccine before tackling the clean up after the recent high waters. Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department has tetanus vaccines available at no-cost to those that have been affected.

Tetanus is a disease contracted by getting the tetanus bacteria into an open cut or would. Although tetanus is rare, it can be very serious or even fatal. It is recommended that anyone who has a dirty wound or have cuts that may be contaminated due to flood clean up get a Tdap/Td booster if they have not had one in the past five years.

Additionally Liz Green, Environmental Services Director, would like to remind everyone that if your water well has been covered by flood water and not properly protected, you may want to have it tested and/or treated before using the water.

For more information on well safety, tetanus, or to schedule to get the vaccine, please contact Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department in your county: Calhoun 304-354-6101; Pleasants 304-684-2461; Ritchie 304-643-2917; Roane 304-927-1480; Wirt 304-275-3131; Wood 304-485-7374; and regionally Toll Free 1-888-550-6797.
