Jaime Alfonso's home on State Street was destroyed, but some of the family pets were rescued by Spencer police and neighbors.

Neighbors heard the explosion when lightening hit an electric pole and transformer across the the street from the dwelling, and some individuals lost electronics with the power surge.

"All of a sudden, we hear a big crackle and boom-like explosion," said neighbor Brandi Smailes.

The Spencer-Roane VFD and a number of Roane VFDs responded to the fire, which was troublesome to put out, with the fire burning in the attic.

Firemen were on scene for several hours.
