WV WATER COMPANY SEEKING 28% INCREASE - 580,000 WV Customers Affected

(05/05/2015)
West Virginia American Water is asking the WV-PSC for a 28% rate increase.

The company serves more than 580,000 people, according to its website.

WV water was stricken by a major chemical spill in the Elk River in 2014, affecting the water of 300,000 customers.

The company says some of the costs for the rate increase could be linked to monumental costs suffered by the company after the spill.

The company is requesting an increase of about $35.5M per year, or 28 percent, for water rates and about $177,000 per year, or 22 percent, for wastewater rates.

If granted in full, the average residential customer, who uses 3,256 gallons per month, would see their monthly water bill go from $41.27 to $52.90.

The minimum bill for 1,500 gallons would change from $23.20 to $30.06.
